Salon Knowledge: Keeping Your Colour Fresh at Home
Your colour's just been done, and it looks fabulous. The big question now is: how do you keep it that way? Lightened hair is high maintenance, but in the best possible sense. It rewards those who care for it and punishes everyone else with brassiness, breakage, and a blow-dry that never quite behaves.
This guide covers the full routine: what to do in the first 72 hours, how to wash correctly, how to use K18 properly, how to protect your colour from heat and UV, and how to maintain your tone at home. It's written from the salon and is here for you to refer back to whenever you need.
The 5 Golden Rules for Colour Care
Your cuticles have just done a hard shift, and they need to settle. Avoid plunging them into a hot shower five minutes later.
Hot water is basically an eviction notice for your new colour.
You didn’t just pay for a beautiful colour only to strip it out with a £4 bottle that smells like a fairground. Use the shampoo I recommend — it’s doing the job your colour needs, not just the job of “foam.”
Use it as directed, and it will pay off. Use it incorrectly, and you're wasting your hair’s best investment down the plughole.
One product, two jobs, half the time. It genuinely changes the game — your hair will thank you, and so will your schedule.
The First 72 Hours: Why They Matter
The 72 hours following a colour service are crucial. Your hair cuticle is still settling, and the colour molecules inside the cortex are at their most vulnerable. The single most effective thing you can do is also the most counterintuitive: leave it alone.
Wait 72 hours before your first wash. This rule has more impact on colour longevity than almost anything else you'll do at home. The colour hasn't fully bonded yet, and washing too soon removes it before it has the chance.
Avoid tight styles and headwear. Friction on freshly coloured hair causes fading, particularly at the hairline. Give it a few days before the ponytail goes back in.
Stay out of steam, chlorine, and saltwater. Saunas, pools, and the sea are particularly harsh during this window. If you can't avoid them, rinse immediately with clean water afterwards.
The Washing Routine: Protecting Your Colour
Most colour fading happens in the shower, and most of it is avoidable. Lightened hair needs a colour-safe shampoo that cleans without lifting the cuticle. A standard supermarket shampoo is fine for unprocessed hair, but for lightened hair, it gradually undoes the work it did.

Finish with a cool rinse. Hot water lifts the cuticle and accelerates fading. Cold water seals it, locks in colour, and adds a noticeable amount of shine. It takes five seconds, and it makes a difference every time.
K18 Molecular Repair: How and When to Use It
K18 isn't a conditioner, and it doesn't behave like one. It's a biomimetic peptide treatment that works inside the hair cortex, reconnecting broken polypeptide chains caused by bleaching, colour, and heat. The results are cumulative — they build over consecutive washes, which is why frequency matters more than the occasional deep treatment.
Apply to clean, towel-dried hair before anything else. One to three pumps from ends to roots, depending on your length and density. Leave for a minimum of four minutes. Don't rinse. Comb through and style as normal.

How Often?
First four to six washes post-colour: every wash. This is the intensive phase. Results compound progressively, and most people notice a real shift in softness, strength, and manageability by the third or fourth use.
Maintenance: every three to four washes. After the intensive phase, this is enough to sustain the repair and protect against ongoing damage from heat and the environment.
K18 and conditioner on the same day: don't do it. Conditioner coats the shaft, preventing K18 from penetrating. If you want extra moisture, layer a conditioning mask on top of K18 after the four minutes are up. Leave for five to fifteen minutes, then rinse. Styling, Heat, and Blow-Dry Technique: Getting It Right
Heat is another main culprit after washing. Lightened hair has a more fragile cuticle than unprocessed hair, and repeated heat without proper protection adds up quietly until the damage becomes visible. The good news is that proper technique with the right products gives a noticeably better result than a rushed one — not just healthier hair, but a better blow-dry.
Apply products to damp hair, then brush through before drying. Products coat the shaft. Applied to damp hair and distributed properly with a brush, they protect every strand. UV radiation degrades colour the same way it bleaches fabric left in a window. For lightened hair, that means a gradual shift toward brassy, flat, and uneven tone. The problem is cumulative, and it can't repair itself — the damage stays until it's cut away. Summer is the worst season for it, but UV is relevant year-round, and it's the easiest thing to protect against.
